There’s a new kid in town that could be just the cell phone cord solution we’ve been waiting for. It’s called USB Type-C. USB Type-C cables have several technical advantages over the current USB cables:
- Size: They are smaller than Micro-USB connectors
- Speed: 3x as fast (10Gbps)
- Power: 100 watt output
That’s not even the best news. The new plug features matching rows of contacts on the top and bottom, much like Apple’s proprietary Lightning cables, meaning you can plug them into your device either direction (no more annoying flipping the cable over).
Europe has long been lobbying for standardized USB cables for mobile devices. This new standard is small enough and powerful enough to make even Apple happy.
