Friday iPhone Update Authorizing T-Mobile’s LTE Network | Gigom

t-mobile-4g-lte-2013

Last week I wrote a post attempting to answer all of the lingering questions about whether current-generation iPhones would work on T-Mobile’s networks. There was only one answer I couldn’t get out of Apple, and that was when it would send out the iOS update officially activating support for T-Mobile’s brand new 4G network. Well, Apple remains mum, but TMoNews seems to have gotten the answer: April 5.

An internal T-Mobile screenshot leaked to TMoNews states that the iOS update will not only authorize the T-Mobile network (T-Mo’s 2G and a portion of its HSPA+ networks are already supported), but will enable Apple’s visual voicemail and MMS features on the carrier as well. Here’s the text of document:

RUMOR: iPhone 5S to launch June 20, go on sale July, claims report | CNet

(Credit: Apple)

Apple will unveil its next iPhone on June 20 and kick off sales in July. At least, that’s the claim from Japanese Mac enthusiast site MacFan.

Marking its 20th anniversary as a Mac-oriented Web site, MacFan suggests that the next-generation iPhone will take the stage at a Apple event on Thursday, June 20. The new iPhone will then go on sale a few weeks later in early July, as reported by Electronista.

The report further claims that Apple will launch the much-rumored low-cost iPhone in August and target it as a pre-paid device for developing markets such as China and India.

T-Mobile Confirms Pricing For iPhone | TechnoBuffalo

T-Mobile_iphone_5

In a few weeks T-Mobile customers will finally be able to purchase an iPhone directly from the carrier, and even take the device for a spin on its new UNcarrier plans. (For more on those, check out Todd’s thorough explanation.) What we didn’t hear during T-Mobile’s official announcement were intentions to also offer the 32GB and 64GB models of the iPhone 5. Those, as you’d rightly guess, will cost a bit more money up front. But you’ll have save a bit of money, too.

Oddly, the two variants will only be offered online, and jump up in $100 increments if you want the larger storage; TmoNews confirmed the pricing with T-Mobile. If you want the 32GB version, customers are required to put $199 down and pay the $20 over 24 months (on top of your monthly bill) for a total of $679. The 64GB model will be $299 with the same exact $20 for 24 months, which comes out to $779.

Find When You Are Eligible For A New iPhone Upgrade Subsidy & Get A Reminder | OSX Daily

iPhone upgrade

Itching to upgrade to a new iPhone but don’t want to pay full price? You can easily find out when you are eligible for the subsidized upgrade rate, plus set an automatic reminder for when the new upgrade rate is available for your current plan. This is great if you want to upgrade your iPhone only when you are eligible for the discounted carrier subsidized rate, which is fairly common considering it’s quite a bit cheaper than paying the early-upgrade rates.

This is all quite easy to setup, and if you want it’ll add the date to your iCloud-synced Calendar and then alert you when the time has come. In most cases this will be anywhere from months away if not a year plus, but you won’t have to wonder anymore, as it shows you exactly when your upgrade eligibility date is. This works for all subsidized carriers in the USA, including AT&T, Verizon, and Sprint, and presumably the same in other countries too.

Apple’s Victory Over HTC Could = Royalty Fee’s From Android | AppleInsider

Apple’s initial legal victory over rival HTC in a patent infringement suit could pave the way for Apple to collect high royalties from devices running Google Android, according to one analysis.

Mike Abramsky with RBC Capital Markets believes that Apple has the upper hand over HTC, which is a smaller handset maker with a limited portfolio of intellectual property. As such, Apple could potentially push for an injunction and ask the U.S. International Trade Commission to bar the import of HTC handsets.

Instead, Abramsky believes it’s more likely that Apple will try to establish a high royalty precedent on Android devices. He said the iPhone maker could garner a deal that’s similar to or even higher than the $5 per unit that Microsoft collects on HTC Android devices.

Apple to Sell No Contract iPhone for $350 | CNET News

Just when you thought you had enough, another rumor pops up.

The latest, courtesy of a story from Boy Genius Report today, has Apple selling a contract-free, $350 iPhone 3GS for the prepaid customer segment. The report also said the next iPhone, which may or may not feature a radical design, will be coming out or announced “by the end of summer, late August-ish.”

An Apple representative wasn’t immediately available to comment on the validity of the report.

Apple has been looking at ways to expand its potential base of customers and cement its leadership role in the smartphone world. The company has already expanded its distribution with the addition of Verizon Wireless as a carrier partner. But Apple wants to go after the burgeoning prepaid market, one of the few areas of customer growth still left in the wireless industry.

LTE Costs and Extra Chipset May Keep Apple Away This year | 9to5Mac

In a note last night, Wayne Lam of IHS-iSuppli made the case against Apple going with 1st generation LTE chips in its next iPhone.

I think Apple is more concerned with the extra space the new chips would take up much more than the extra cost of the components.“The first generation of LTE chipsets forced a lot of design compromises with the handset, and some of those we are just not willing to make,” said Peter Oppenheimer, Apple chief operating officer, speaking at the company’s April 2011 earnings call.

The next round of chips which would allow Apple to put LTE in a similarly sized package won’t hit the streets until the first half of 2012.
