Personal iDevices In The Workplace? | Cult of Mac

BYOD is certainly one of the biggest technology buzzwords right now. The concept of users supplying their own iPad, iPhone, or even their own MacBook can create challenges for IT, but it can also provides advantages. Users choosing the devices and apps that they feel most comfortable and productive using is one. Businesses not needing to pay for mobile devices themselves or plans to support them is another.

One of the basic assumptions when it comes to considering, testing, and implementing a BYOD program is that the ability to bring personal tools into the workplace is something that users ultimately want and think will improve their work. The rest of the discussion, including practical issues like device or data management and the range of devices to be support, is predicated on this core assumption that BYOD is desirable on the part of users.

XBMC is a powerful free app that turns any Mac or PC into a full fledged media center. The newest version has been updated with a slew of improvements, but most interesting for iPhone and iPad users is the addition of AirPlay video support. This means you’ll be able to wirelessly transmit video from an iOS device to anything running XBMC, whether it’s a Mac hooked up to a TV or an old PC, here is how to set that up and get AirPlay video working.

Mountain Lion Beta 2 Released to Developers, Adds Safari Tab Syncing | Mac|Life

As if Friday wasn’t busy enough for everyone trying to get their hands on a new iPad, developers had an extra treat waiting for them when they returned home: A second beta of the forthcoming OS X Mountain Lion, adding iCloud sync for Safari tabs and requesting permission before accessing contacts.

MacRumors is reporting that Apple released a second developer-only beta of OS X Mountain Lion, the next major version of the Mac operating system which is expected in late summer. Technically Mac OS X 10.8, the new beta squashes some bugs but is still missing a key feature already announced: AirPlay mirroring, which is not supported with the most recent Apple TV software.

OS X FileVault Questions Answered | CNET

Apple’s FileVault technology is a method of automatically encrypting your files so you do not have to worry about data theft should your system be stolen. In its first iteration FileVault was just used to encrypt the user’s home directory, but in OS X Lion Apple introduced a second-generation full-disk encryption scheme that has been dubbed FileVault 2.

Many people who are considering using FileVault 2 have been asking about questions such as whether or not the encryption is needed, and expressing concerns about its security.

Is The New Journal Feature in iPhoto For iOS The Start of Something Bigger? | TUAW

iPhoto Journal Pic

I certainly hope so. One of the joys of using a Mac with MobileMe was that someone with little or no computer sophistication could get photos easily published to the web. Great for families sharing with distant relatives and friends, or anyone who needed to get a gallery of photos to the internet only had to make a couple of quick clicks and it was done.

It was sad when Apple announced the demise of MobileMe, which goes dark this June, and the loss of MobileMe galleries. Photo Stream is cool, but the photos expire after a month. Many Apple customers were hoping for a replacement for those galleries, and the new iOS version of iPhoto is riding to the rescue. What’s offered is more powerful in some ways than the MobileMe galleries. The templates are prettier, you have more control of the appearance of the pages, and you can include location data and even weather. You can’t password protect sites, but maybe that will come. Photo Journals is a nice feature and not a direction I expected Apple to go.

Full Version of CCleaner Now Released For The Mac | MakeUseOf

No matter how intuitive and reportedly “trouble free” Macs are to run, believe me, several months after you add hundreds of files, applications, and download thousands of webpages, your shiny new iMac or MacBook Air is going to run slower than when you first booted it out the box. That’s because like any computer, digital junk files pile up in the hard drive; and eventually it just needs to get cleaned out.

CCleaner is one such application utility that can perform cleaning operations for you.

Get Front Row for Mac OS X 10.7 Lion | OS X Daily

You might have heard that Mac OS X Lion ditches Front Row, the easily accessible media player that was activated by hitting Command+Escape on a keyboard or by pressing play on an Apple Remote. If you like Front Row and are disappointed in Lion leaving it behind, you can easily get it working again just by copying a couple files over from the prior OS version.

The Lion Has Landed | FOM

Lion announced for tomorrow (7/20) on Earnings Call! It’s been a LONG wait but it’s finally here, OS X Lion! The first rumor was a 1AM UK time launch, which came and went with much sadness on Twitter. Next, it was thought to be GMT 1AM (an hour later). A no-go on that time, too. Finally around 2:30 GMT App Stores all over the world started acting “buggy”. They were dropping in and out until finally, they were just DOWN. Still no Lion. But now, just announced on the Q3 Earning Call, “I’ll be here tomorrow!” Continue reading The Lion Has Landed | FOM
